Tuesday August 10, 2010 2 Cor 9:6-10, Jn 12:24-26
Chrisitne,
Today’s first reading states “whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly and whoever sows bountifully will reap bountifully”. Have you ever heard the saying “you get what you put in?” Well apparently it also applies to our faith. If all I put into my spiritual life is an attendance on Sunday morning for mass, then I might not get more than what father says during his homily. But if I also took the time to say a few prayers during the week, if I take the time to do some random acts of kindness, if I take the time to open the scriptures and meditate on the word, if I take the time to so some spiritual reading then I might get a lot out of church. Because no matter how great your priest is, he really cannot spoon feed you the word of God or grow your spiritual life.
Often times it is not what we hear on Sunday that grows our lives but what we do on Monday, Tuesday and the rest of the week that makes us grow in the spirit. So I want to challenge us today, if we have ever said that we do not get anything out of going to church, let us ask ourselves how much we put in it. How much do we prepare our souls for the reception of God’s word. Remember there are really no short cuts in life, you and I have got to put in quality time, if we expect a quality spiritual life. The priest is not there to do it for you, he too is fighting his own demons so that he may become an even holier person.
In this moment with gratitude
